A lesson plan for Grades 9–12 Advanced Placement Biology and Biology
In this lesson, students explore the scientific enterprise in relation to the role of women in science as it has developed over the last 150 years. This lesson has a focus on social justice in that it extends students’ prior knowledge of the contributions of women and racial minorities. Students compare the careers of two women engaged in medical research in two centuries. Students will also learn about xenotransplanation, the use of animal organs and tissues for transplant into human patients. Science NetLinks provides a links to the “Women in Medicine” student E-Sheet and the stories of Elizabeth Blackwell, the first female doctor and Suzanne Ildstad, a researcher in the area of xenotransplants, which are found on the National Institutes of Health website. The lesson plan also suggests questions for class discussion and opportunities for extending research, and provides links to web resources that focus on minority achievement in the field of science.
