In this Science Update, students explore why some people get cold even when sitting in a warm room. Science NetLinks provides a link to the audio file, a written transcript, and questions that engage students in a discussion of the sensory receptors found in the nerve cells under the skin and in the spinal cord. Information in this lesson also explains the difference between peripheral nerve endings and central nerve endings and the role each plays in determining the body’s reaction to temperature. The lesson also provides links to websites that feature stories about human sensory systems and menthol’s effects on cold receptors.
