Cassowary calls
In this Science Update, students explore the rare and often inaudible call of the cassowary, a bird found in Papua New Ginea. Students evaluate the methods used by scientists to record and study the calls of these reclusive birds. Science NetLinks provides a link to the audio file, a written transcript, and questions that engage students in a discussion about the advantages of the low-frequency communication system used by the cassowary. The lesson plan also provides links to Rainforest Australia, Stanford University and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, all of which provide information on animals that use a low-frequency communication.
