Cell phones & driving
In this Science Update, students explore how talking on a cell phone while driving may detract from a driver’s ability to pay attention. This audio clip describes the results of a study completed at the University of Rhode Island that tracked the eye movement of drivers while they performed various cognitive tasks. Students evaluate the findings of the research and work together to develop their own study to measure the effects of cell phone use on a driver’s ability to pay attention. Science NetLinks provides a link to the audio file, a written transcript, and questions that engage students in a discussion about whether there should be laws regulating the use of cell phones while driving. This lesson provides links to studies with conflicting results completed by the Harvard School of Public Health and the National Security Council.
