A lesson plan for Grade 5 Social Studies
In this Xpeditions lesson, students research and learn about the culture, physical geography, and history of states in each region of the United States. Activities in this lesson engage students in collaborative group work, online research, and development of map-reading and planning skills.
Students will:
- research cultural, geographic, and historical information about selected states in the United States;
- create a plan for travel through one region of the United States with their families; and
- identify each of the states in the United States.

- Objective 1.01: Describe the absolute and relative location of major landforms, bodies of water,and natural resources in the United States and other countries of North America.
- Objective 1.03: Compare and contrast the physical and cultural characteristics of regions within the United States, and other countries of North America.
- Objective 1.05: Explain how and why population distribution differs within and between countries of North America.
- Objective 1.07: Analyze the past movement of people, goods, and ideas within and among the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Central America and compare it to movement today.
