In this Xpeditions lesson, students explore the most populous cities in the state, province, or country. Activities in this lesson engage students in collaborative group work, development of map-reading and critical thinking skills.

Students will:

  • become familiar with the location and some of the other characteristics of the ten most populous cities in their state, province, or country.

Xpeditions provides detailed instructions for completing the lesson, suggestions for assessment and extension activities, and links to helpful web resources.

Grade 4

  • Goal 1: The learner will apply the five themes of geography to North Carolina and its people.
    • Objective 1.01: Locate, in absolute and relative terms, major landforms, bodies of water and natural resources in North Carolina.
    • Objective 1.02: Describe and compare physical and cultural characteristics of the regions.
    • Objective 1.03: Suggest some influences that location has on life in North Carolina such as major cities, recreation areas, industry, and farms.

Grade 5

  • Goal 1: The learner will apply key geographic concepts to the United States and other countries of North America.
    • Objective 1.05: Explain how and why population distribution differs within and between countries of North America.
    • Objective 1.07: Analyze the past movement of people, goods, and ideas within and among the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Central America and compare it to movement today.
