In this lesson, students will research daily life, industries, and the political situation along the United States/Mexico border. They'll conduct Internet research to learn more about what it might be like to live at the border and the controversies surrounding U.S. government policies along the border. They'll conclude by creating visual presentations showcasing the things they've learned about the border.

Grade 10 — Economics and Civics

  • Goal 4: The learner will explore active roles as a citizen at the local, state, and national levels of government.
    • Objective 4.05: Analyze consequences of compliance or noncompliance with laws governing society.
  • Goal 7: The learner will investigate how and why individuals and groups make economic choices.
    • Objective 7.04: Analyze the impact on economic activities of specialization, division of labor, consumption and production increases.
  • Goal 8: The learner will analyze features of the economic system of the United States.
    • Objective 8.03: Explain the circular flow of economic activities and how interactions determine the prices of goods and services.
  • Goal 10: The learner will develop, defend, and evaluate positions on issues regarding the personal responsibilities of citizens in the American constitutional democracy.
    • Objective 10.02: Develop, defend, and evaluate positions on issues regarding diversity in American life.

Grades 11–12 — Latino American Studies

  • Goal 4: The learner will examine the relationship between Latin American countries and the United States.
    • Objective 4.05: Analyze the causes of migration and immigration from selected countries of Latin America and assess their impact on these countries and on the United States.
  • Goal 5: The learner will analyze contemporary issues that face Latino Americans in North Carolina and the rest of the United States.
    • Objective 5.03: Assess the economic impact of Latino American immigrants and citizens on the United States and North Carolina.
