In this ARTSEDGE lesson, students improve their ability to analyze, reorganize, critique, and create by creating and painting mythological characters. Students also gain insight into Greek culture through the exploration of Greek mythology.

Grade 6

  • Goal 1: The learner will develop critical and creative thinking skills and perceptual awareness necessary for understanding and producing art.
  • Goal 2: The learner will develop skills necessary for understanding and applying media, techniques, and processes.
    • Objective 2.01: Recognize the unique properties of various media.
    • Objective 2.02: Explore and identify the use of a variety of materials using proper vocabulary and terminology.
  • Goal 5: The learner will understand the visual arts in relation to history and cultures.
    • Objective 5.01: Demonstrate an understanding that the visual arts have a history, purpose and function in all cultures.
    • Objective 5.02: Identify specific works of art as belonging to a particular culture, time and place.

  • Goal 11: The learner will recognize the common characteristics of different cultures in South America and Europe.
    • Objective 11.01: Identify the concepts associated with culture such as language, religion, family, and ethnic identity, and analyze how they both link and separate societies.
