In this lesson from EDSITEment, students learn about the environment, history, language, and culture of the Tlingit, Lakota, and Cherokee. They explore the meaning of cultural traditions and how they are maintained. They also learn to say a few words in the languages of these Native American tribes.

After completing the activities in this lesson plan, students will:

  • understand the meaning of a tradition and know how it is maintained
  • have a general knowledge of the environment, history and culture of the Tlingit, Lakota, and Cherokee.
  • be able to say a few words in the languages of these three tribes
  • be aware of differences and similarities between the three tribal cultures
  • understand the importance of maintaining the traditions and languages of native cultures

  • Goal 1: The learner will analyze how individuals, families, and groups are similar and different.
    • Objective 1.02: Identify various groups to which individuals and families belong.

    • Objective 3.03: Compare and contrast past and present changes within the local community and communities around the world.

    • Objective 3.01: Compare similarities and differences between oneself and others.
    • Objective 3.02: Describe similarities and differences among families in different communities.
    • Objective 3.03: Compare similarities and differences among cultures in various communities.
