Clowning around

A lesson plan for Grades K–2 Mathematics
In this lesson, part of a set of four related Illuminations lessons on combinations, students are encouraged to discover all the combinations. Students determine the number of clown faces that can be made with two mouth possibilities and four colored-hat possibilities. This activity strengthens the students' problem-solving skills (including elimination and collection of organized data) and their ability to draw conclusions. The use of higher-level thinking skills (synthesis, analysis, and evaluations) is the overall goal.
