Dear Parents: As a special education teacher working with kindergarten children, I am designing a play group. This will help children learn social skills. These skills will include sharing, making suggestions for play, taking turns, respect for others belongings and feelings. The qualities of friendship will be emphasized. In this program I will teach children the kindergarten children to interact with children with special needs. The group lesson will take thirty minutes a day and will occur in close coordination with your childŐs teacher. By participating, your child will spend a small portion of the day with three or four other peers in play activities under my supervision. I anticipate that your child will benefit from this participation. Learning to start and extend positive social interactions seems to produce positive effects for all children involved in the interactions. Your child will also have the opportunity to develop new friendships, increase their awareness about children with disabilities, and receive special attention in a small group setting. If you have any questions about this program, I will be pleased to talk with you. I will be sending some activities for you and your child to do at home to reinforce social interactions. Sincerely,
