ARTIST RESEARCH PROJECT

In this Internet research project you are expected to learn about one particular American artist. The purpose of the report is to summarize the life of the artist and identify the influences on and unique characteristics of his/her work. You will be expected to create a timeline which shows the chronological sequence of events in this artist’s life.

You will  write a summary report beginning with the statistical information of birth, family background, schooling, marriage, children, where the artist lived, studied, and worked. You will include when and how the artist’s work became recognized as special.  You will determine what style the artist’s work is considered to be; who or what the artist’s work was influenced by; and what effect their work had on other artists.  You may use Primary resources (materials that are contemporary to the artist like an interview, a letter, a diary or personal writing or a painting.  You may use Secondary resources (materials that were written later about the artist to include magazine articles, critiques of the artist’s work or biographical articles from encyclopedias). This report will contain cites from these sources in the body of the report and the sources used will be listed in an electronic citation page at the end of the report.

The third product in this project is a PowerPoint presentation.  You will copy two paintings into your PowerPoint presentations from the Internet and a portrait or picture of the artist.  You will make a storyboard using templates (nine to a page) created from the information in your report. This PowerPoint presentation will accompany your oral presentation.

Go to NC Wise Owl - Reference Zone - Yahoo - Arts and Humanities -  Artists -  Masters  Choose an artist from the list and research his/her life (choose titles that include a biography) on the Internet and in electronic encyclopedias.   Read over the articles and write down information that is significant, that completes your outline for the timeline.  Use notecards and write down the information that answer the questions that you need to complete in order to write your summary. Copy the URL and the titles of articles that you actually got information from into a folder in MSWorks and label them so you’ll know which question they helped your answer.  If you find links that are also useful, bookmark them to save you time when you come back to your computer.

Power Point Presentation

Use this presentation to highlight the significant points of your oral presentation on the artist.  Complete a storyboard using your timeline to cover the main points.  Be sure to include two samples of the aritist’s work and a portrait or picture of the artist.

Introductory slide naming the artist  and naming you as the presenter.

Closing with a source slide acknowledging the source of the pictures/images.

(Use the same format as you used for the Citation Page in your written report)
