    2. Characters: John, Jeremy, Jake, and John's Mom

    John's friends have all gotten new shoes. John's Mom works at a grocery store and can barely make the car payments. John cuts grass but has to help pay the bills. John's best friend, Jake, is trying to convince John to go shopping to get new shoes. Jeremy, another friend whose parents are both doctors, comes in with new shoes.

    3. Characters: Joe, Ricky

    Ricky is a new 6th grader who has recently transferred to the school. He is extremely shy and afraid to talk to new people. Every morning Joe, a huge 7th grader, backs Ricky into a corner and bullies him out of his breakfast and lunch money. Ricky is starving by the time he gets home.

    It's break time at school. Malika's mom and dad have just gotten a divorce. Malika hates living with her mom one-week and her dad the next. Her pet dog has just died, and her best friend, Kate, is about to tell her that her family is moving to Florida. Kate and another friend Jason, whose parents have been divorced for 8 years, approach Malika

    5. Characters: Jim, Renee', John, Whitney

    Renee's parents have gone to work and school's out. Her parents have made sure she understands the rule- NO ONE IS ALLOWED IN THE HOUSE WHEN THEY ARE NOT HOME. Renee's friends, Jim, John, and Whitney have come over to hang out. They want to come in. Renee defies her parent's rule and lets them in. Jim lights a cigarette and drops it. The curtains catch on fire.

  5. Is it worth it to take a stand for what you believe in?

Characters: Tara, Meko, Rosa, and Shakea

Tara has a friend, Meko, who has been a true friend since the 3rd grade. Meko lets Tara borrow her jewelry. In fact, Tara has a great ring that she is letting Meko borrow for the next two weeks. Meko is growing and is a little chubby.

Tara is walking home after school with Shakea and Rosa because Meko had to attend her aunt's funeral. As they are walking, Rosa starts to bad-mouth Meko. Right after Shakea agrees that Meko is a "fat-so," Tara sees Meko coming around the corner to join them.
