The Wall the Romans Built *
1) But the soldiers of Rome had not succeeded in conquering the whole island of Britain. Far to the north in the rugged hills lived a fierce people called Picts. The Picts had lived in Britain even before the Celts, and they were savage fighters. Not only did they refuse to be conquered, but they often came down from the north to attack the Romans. Their raids became so troublesome that the Roman emperor Hadrian finally ordered a wall to be built in the north to keep the Picts away.
2) But then the great Roman Empire began to lose its power. In 383, the Roman soldiers were called back to Rome to fight other wars, and they never returned. Today Hadrians Wall stands in the sleepy English farmland as a reminder of the days long ago when Rome ruled Britain.
3) The Romans first invaded Britain in the year 43 A.D. With their great armies and excellent planning, they quickly defeated the native Celtic people. Then they set about building forts, roads, and cities so that they could make their new colony as much like Rome as possible. The Celts had never seen such wide, straight roads or grand buildings, and in a few years many of them began to live like the Romans. Some of the Celts even served in the Roman army.
4) In northern England, near the border of Scotland, a wall runs along the hills and valleys of the countryside. Grass and weeds grow out of the cracks in the wall, and in places it has toppled over and crumbled with age. Farmers have stolen its stones to build walls of their own. Anyone looking at this ruin today would find it hard to believe that this wall was once the pride of the Romans.
5) Hadrians Wall took seven years to build. It was 118 kilometers, or 74 miles, long, and about 8 feet, or 2.5 meter, thick. Sixteen large forts were placed along the wall, with many smaller forts between them. The wall was as tall as three men, and large ditches in front of and behind the wall helped keep the Picts away. For more than two hundred years Roman soldiers manned the forts, keeping the cities of the south safe from the Picts.
