A cormorant at the edge of a pond, Everglades National Park, Florida. Everglades National Park was declared a national park in 1934, though it took the park’s proponents another 13 years to acquire funds and land. The park protects approximately one-fifth of the Everglades ecosystem and is the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States. It is a haven for a variety of rare and endangered species. The site is also an International Biosphere Reserve, a Wetland of International Importance, and a World Heritage Site.
