Soldiers both North and South had to cook their own food depending on what was available in the area or through foraging details. Here, a Confederate soldier peels potatoes to prepare a stew for his fellow soldiers. Photographed at the living history program of “Union Occupation” at Bennett Place State Historic Site in Durham, North Carolina.
