This picture of the Navy destroyer, U.S.S. Reuben James, was taken April 29, 1939 on the Hudson River in New York. The ship has four smokestacks and two masts.

On October 31, 1941,while escorting supply ships to England, the U.S.S. Reuben James was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine. More than 100 sailors were killed. This act spurred Congress to end most of the provisions of the Neutrality Act.
