This video demonstrates how to find resources and online professional development courses on the LEARN NC website that are aligned to the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards.

The challenge of meeting the new North Carolina Professional Teaching standards just got a little easier thanks to LEARN NC. We’ve begun to align our collection of professional development courses and best practices resources to these standards. The new standards represent a wholesale change to the way teachers are evaluated and we wanted to create a simple way to find resources and online courses to help teachers address these new criteria. You can easily find the standards and aligned resources from the main menu of the LEARN NC website, located at www.learnnc.org.

Click on the link “NC Professional Teaching Standards and Aligned Resources” under the heading “Standards.” Aligned resources appear as hyperlinks associated with the specific objective they support. Resources related to each teaching standard can be found by selecting a standard. For example, let’s click on standard four, "Teachers facilitate learning for their students."

This brings up all the objectives of standard four. Next, we’ll click on the objective we’re looking for. For now, let’s select standard 4.05, "Teachers help students develop critical thinking and problem solving skills." We’ll click the "find related resources" link below the description for the objective. This action brings up all the LEARN NC resources that are aligned to standard 4.05.

Currently, searching according to the NC teaching standards returns only LEARN NC online professional courses. We’re learning on making our best practices and other areas of the LEARN NC collection searchable too, and we expect this work to be completed by the start of the 2010-2011 school year. For the time being, this search returns a total of 21 professional development courses that are aligned to standard 4.05. From here we can select the resource that most meets our needs. Let’s click on "Teaching online courses," and that brings the description up for that online course.

As we scroll down, we’ll see the heading "Standards alignment." Under that heading, we see all of the NC Professional Teaching Standards that this course addresses in addition to the standard we searched for. By searching for resources this way, it’s easier for teachers to find the information they need to address the new state teaching standards.
