Vietnam is most densely settled in its major river estuaries and along its over 2,000-mile coastline. These areas are most accessible by watercraft and now coastal roads. Such communities generally engage in fishing, providing themselves and others in the interior with a high protein food. Rice, fish, and green vegetables are a favored meal throughout Southeast Asia.
