Three smiling men wave and gesture in a Chinatown market at Ho Chi Minh City

Sizes available: 1024×683 | 600×400

Three smiling men wearing brimmed caps wave and gesture to the photographer at a market in Ho Chi Minh City’s Chinatown. The man in front, who wears a Calvin Klein logo baseball cap, makes a “thumbs up” gesture, generally signifying a positive or “good” response in Southeast Asia.

Market buildings are visible in back and a pile of large fiber baskets is visible at left.

The men are waiting with others by their parked motorcycles. They may be waiting for other family members who are shopping, or they may be acting as “motorcycle taxis” for shoppers. In some parts of Southeast Asia, men with motorcycles offer rides for fees to local pedestrians. This is generally safe and legal in areas where bicycle taxis operate. Shoppers will patronize the same taxis regularly and become familiar with the drivers.
