Sita watches as Rama arrives at her palace (Thai Ramayana mural in Emerald Buddha Temple)

Sizes available: 683×1024 | 333×500

Sita watches as Rama arrives at her palace, as seen on a Ramayana mural in the Emerald Buddha Temple.

In this detail, Sita appears to be leaning out of a window on the right to watch as royal princes arrive to compete for her hand in marriage. The hermit, Rama, Laksman, and a young hermit assistant pass by walking across the tiled floor of the palace’s inner courtyard.

In the Ramayana, Sita and Rama see each other and immediately fall in love before he competes and succeeds in stringing and shooting the bow of Siva. Sita’s father has declared that whoever can manage this task will marry the beautiful princess Sita.

This image was photographed in November 1982.
