Rama, Sita, and Laksman leave sleeping followers (Thai Ramayana mural)
Rama, Sita, and Laksman leave their sleeping followers behind in this detail on a mural at the Emerald Buddha Temple.
In the background, just outside the white walls that border the city from the forest, Rama’s devoted followers lie asleep in uniform rows. (The sleeping people appear almost like graves in this painting.) Rama, Sita, and Laksman decide that they must face their fourteen years of exile in the forest alone. Thus, they leave their sleeping followers behind during the night at the start of their journey.
This image was photographed in August 1984.
