Javanese dancer plays demon king Ravana in Ramayana performance at Yogyakarta

Sizes available: 683×1024 | 333×500

A Javanese dancer poses as the demon king Ravana in a Ramayana performance at Yogyakarta in July 1986. He wears dark red make-up and a painted black moustache to look fierce. Long black hair hangs below his tall red and gold crown. In addition to his crown and gold ornaments, the Ravana dancer wears a Yogyakarta batik waistcloth and red print patterned leggings with a matching red cloth wrapped around the back of his neck and across his chest.

Here the demon king poses on his right knee with his left foot bent and pointed out to his left. His right hand rests curled against his right thigh while his left hand rests over his left knee. He stares sternly to his left.
