Tiny Hanuman kills female demon guard in sea on Thai Ramayana mural at Emerald Buddha Temple

Sizes available: 683×1024 | 333×500

On this mural image at the Emerald Buddha Temple, Hanuman is killing the female demon guard who stands in the sea around Ravana’s island of Lanka.

Once the monkey kings and their troops agree to help Rama, Rama asks Hanuman to fly ahead to Lanka and tell Sita that they are coming soon to rescue her.

When Hanuman arrives at the island of Lanka, he must confront this female ogress. Hanuman makes himself small enough to crawl in the demon’s mouth and enter her stomach, where he uses his knife to kill her.

In this image, the demon’s stomach is cut open and her head droops although she is still standing. The tiny white figure of Hanuman stands triumphant on her left shoulder. Sharks and other fish swim nearby in the waves attracted to the dying demon’s blood.
