Hermit advises demon king Ravana to return Sita to Rama (Thai Ramayana mural)

Sizes available: 1024×698 | 600×409

In this mural detail at the Emerald Buddha Temple, a wise man interprets Ravana’s bad dream and advises him to return Sita to Rama and end the fight, or else Ravana will face certain ruin.

A white-haired bearded hermit sits in an elevated pavillion and gestures with his left hand above the kneeling Ravana’s head. Ravana makes the Thai hand gesture of prayer and respect towards the wise man. The head and feet of a woman, probably Sita, are visible behind Ravana. Gold leaf curtains are painted beside the pavillion’s square columns.

This image was photographed in August 1984.
