Hermit sitting and teaching Sita's son in forest (Thai Ramayana mural)
A wise hermit kneels on the ground and gives lessons to Sita’s son in the forest, as portrayed in a mural detail at the Emerald Buddha Temple.
Sita and her green-skinned son sit attentively, kneeling with hands in prayer position, in front of the hermit who holds up a tablet.
A patch of paint is chipped and missing in the upper right background of this image. Murals at the Emerald Buddha Temple are periodically repainted in succession over the decades, so some images always are more newly painted and conserved than others.
In the Ramayana, Sita and her son spend many years in the forest under the guidance of the wise hermit, unbeknownst to Rama who believes he had her killed by his brother Laksman during her pregnancy.
This image was photographed in August 1984.
