Hermit tells Rama story of Sita and sons, now united at palace (Thai Ramayana mural)

Sizes available: 1024×683 | 600×400

A mural at the Emerald Buddha Temple shows the hermit telling Rama the story of Sita and her sons, now united at the palace.

On the left of this happy reunion scene, the hermit sits cross-legged in a royal pavillion gesturing as he tells Rama and Laksman how he found Sita, tended her and her son, and then created a second son when they feared the first one was lost.

On the right on the veranda of a second pavillion, Rama sits with Sita who gestures gently to one of her sons who kneels at the base of their pavillion. Their second son sits and talks with Hanuman who lounges in relaxation on the tile floor between the two pavillions.

Like many scenes in the murals at the Emerald Buddha Temple, the appearance of the same character, Rama, in two different places within the same image represents sequential action. First the hermit tells him the story, then he is reunited happily with his wife and two children.

This image was photographed in August 1984.
