Roman Catholic nun in Saquisilí Ecuador

Size: 682×1024

A Roman Catholic nun in traditional habit is walking in the market town of Saquisilí, Ecuador. Her habit is black and white and she is holding a small green pouch.

Roman Catholicism is the official religion of Ecuador and is practiced by twelve million out of thirteen million inhabitants of Ecuador. The Church was very influential during the colonial period, mostly through its large land holdings. After independence the influence of the Church was curtailed, but the institution remains very popular among Ecuadorians.

Saquisilí has one of the largest daily markets in Ecuador. Everything from agricultural products to livestock to handcrafted goods can be found in Saquisilí. The active market makes the town a lively place to visit and is a popular tourist destination.
