A visitor to Marble Mountain, near DaNang, might appreciate the serene atmosphere, the intriguing caves filled with Buddhist carvings, and a view of the city below. Buddhist monks live inside a temple at the base of the mountain. You can hear the Buddhist monks praying inside the temple, as monks here have done over hundreds of years.
Like many geographical features in Vietnam, there is always more to the story than just what you see. Despite the fact that this mountain is a religious destination, this area was used by the military during the Vietnam War. Americans built several bases in the area, and used the caves in these mountains for tactical purposes.
From journal:
But I am glad I stopped in DaNang because today was a lovely day…Then stopped at Marble Mountain. I was especially reminded of Putuoshan, China. Temples in a mountain setting- beautiful but touristy. I was also reminded of the Hindu Caves in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The day was beautiful, the nature was beautiful. The tourists were slightly entertained and entertaining and the touts were touts.
