This was recorded as part of a multi-day Mekong Delta tour that started in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam) and finished in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. It is a unique experience to cross the border over water rather than overland. We were amongst the first groups to cross the Vietnam-Cambodia border by boat in 2001.
One of the tourists was the Lonely Planet author for Cambodia who was researching this border crossing as an update for the next Cambodia edition. On many of our stops along the way, we would be surrounded by curious onlookers. Children were especially eager to be near us.
In this recording, you can hear the Lonely Planet author egging on the kids, telling them to “get it up,” or applaud. Then he starts acting silly so that they’ll laugh. He also tells me at the end of the recording that because of my headphones and microphone, the children are calling me “grandmother.”
