Unlike American buses, most buses in other parts of the world, especially those outside very large cities, (like Bangkok) have at least two employees. One employee drives the bus, the other takes the bus fare from the passengers. Sometimes the fare is the same for everyone, sometimes it differs according to how far you are traveling.

This audio is from Chiang Mai, Thailand. The fare collector was female. She had a coin belt, where she could stack the coins she received in special slots and deliver change quickly. This was a fairly high tech system, by most standards. She walked up and down the aisle, jiggling her coins to get the passengers’ attention. She has a difficult job keeping track of people who have recently boarded and remembering those whom she has already charged, especially since the buses are usually packed with people.
