In a room at a Buddhist temple in Nakhon si Thammarat, people stop to receive a fortune. To do this, they use fortune sticks. Several bamboo sticks with words printed onto the stick are put into one canister. People shake the canister until one stick falls out. The fortune on that stick corresponds to a longer written fortune which you can take with you.
The noise you hear is the sound of the bamboo sticks being shaken. You can also hear some Thai spoken, and some money that I am putting on the counter so that I may pay for a chance to receive my fortune.
