Two Balinese women walking with baskets of soil on their heads

Size: 686×1024

Two Balinese women walk in single file carrying baskets of soil on their heads. The woman in front uses her right hand to stabilize her load, while using her left hand to shield her eyes from strong sunlight. She is wearing a blue T-shirt and a brown skirt. The woman behind her is only partially visible at the left of the frame.

Unlike men, Balinese women carry heavy loads on their heads rather than on their backs, as is customary in most other areas of Indonesia. Balinese women do much of the island’s heavy labor, including construction work.
