A cement-reinforced grey aquaduct channels water over a road to green Balinese rice fields. Flat wall rims and a few square platforms at the top of the aquaduct allow people access for repairs and a means to walk across when necessary.
Farmers have been routing water from rice field to rice field down slopes on the southern face of Bali Island for many centuries. Although much of the irrigation water is still conveyed through bamboo pipes or open earth canals, some channels such as this that cross automobile roads now have been made more permanent and flood-proof with contemporary aquaduct materials and designs.
