A Balinese farmer plows a flooded rice field with a team of two brown cows. Barefoot and dressed in shorts, singlet, and hat, the farmer wields a thin whip as he drives his cattle and plow through the ankle-deep water.
Not all Balinese farmers are wealthy enough to own cattle, and cattle-driven plows can only be used where the land is sufficiently flat. In steep terraces in the Balinese uplands, all field preparation must be done with human labor and hand tools.
