Balinese children stand at edge of walled compound
Five Balinese children--two barely visible--stand peering out from the edge of a walled compound. The wall’s corner post is seen at right and lush greenery frames the children at left.
The girl at the left carries a baby in a sling on her back. The infant is peeking over her shoulder. The shyly smiling boy in the middle rests one bent leg up on the wall’s cornerstone. A third child wearing only shorts leans up against the corner stone. One more child is crouching and barely visible on the lower right.
When children in Bali are not in school or helping their parents with farmwork, they play freely in their walled neighborhoods. Older children often carry their younger siblings around with them in cloth slings.
