Men in a circle take bets before a cock fight. The key participants squat in front holding two fine white cocks that face each other before the battle. A standing crowd surrounds them.
Gambling on cock fights and card games are traditionally favored recreation activities for Balinese men, as depicted in this 1986 photograph. Women do not generally participate in gambling activities except to sell snacks to the audience.
The roosters are pampered and treated well by their owners before the fights in hopes of raising a winning rooster. Most cock fighting is now illegal in Indonesia.
