I lived with a Malaysian family for about two weeks. They invited me, a complete stranger to live in their house and attend their son’s wedding.

The family lived in a simple 3 bedroom house, they owned one car and a few mopeds, and they had a large yard which included a chicken coop. All of these things indicate that this family was probably fairly well off, by Malaysian standards.

This recording is of the sounds the chickens and roosters made in their coop. The rooster sound is so distinctive throughout Asia — you can always hear them in the morning and throughout the day, though each rooster has his own style.

From my journal:

I notice everyone is out with the chickens.… So I go out there. Norinda and Puya sit next to me — the hand me an ayam (chicken) to hold. They weigh the other ayam. Mak has one — she tries to provoke it to fight the other one. Abang leaves. Bak makes fun of me feeling sad and putting my chin in my hand.
