In this recording, you can hear young girls selling handmade bracelets- they repeat the same phrase in English over and over again. This is common in Angkor Wat, where at every temple, children and adults are selling everything from crafts to food to drinks to the many tourists.

These sales to tourists are an important source of income for the families living in this area. Young children might be helping out their families by selling these items rather than attending school, which is often too costly for poorer families. Obviously, the children are learning some English, even outside of school.

From my journal:

I looked at royal palace. D went to get a drink. We ate rice and talked to little girls selling flutes and bells. They were smart and cute and fun to talk to.… Little girls came sprinting after us to offer drinks — I ran away, and one child chased after me. At least they have fun. Tired of being in the sun. Get down, want D to hurry. Little girls look at the animals on my Australia shirt. (Why didn’t I record?) I paid one to find D. Then we sat while D drank more — mome wanted to sell us stuff. Girl bought egg with 200 riel I gave her.
