This is a recording of children reciting their lessons in a one-room schoolhouse located among the ruins of an ancient Khmer civilization in Cambodia. If I remember correctly, the teacher was holding a book at the front of the class, and all the children would read the words on the page together.

The schools in Cambodia vary, but some rural schools are like early American schools. One teacher teaches a class of different aged children who learn together, especially by group recitation.

From my journal:

Bakong — large complex — mountain model, same as Bakhang near Angkor. This was made more interesting becase a school and monastary were on the grounds. I liked watching the school.… Temple was okay. But I liked the surrounding buildings and carvings on doors and lintels.
