White-peaked mountains tower in the background of a green landscape in Nepal. Machhapuchhre, the mountain on the right, stands 6993 meters above sea level and was named for its fishtail shape. The local population considers this peak to be a sacred place of the god, Shiva, and as such it has never been climbed to the summit. Annapurna I, on the left, stands 8091 meters above sea level and is the highest in a series of peaks which are popular trekking destinations located in the Annapurna region of the Himalayas.
