Dhaulagiri mountain on the horizon, under the cloud, beyond the terraced rice fields

Size: 675×1024

Green cascading terraces stand in the foreground in Naudanda, Nepal. Houses and patches of forest are scattered around the mountainsides. In the background, the peak of Dhaulagiri Mountain can be seen above the clouds.

Terraces are an important feature of mountain agriculture, and are created over several generations of farming.

Dhaulagiri, at 8,167 meters, is the seventh-highest mountain in the world. The name Dhaulagiri comes from two Sanskrit words, and means “white mountain. It forms the eastern anchor of the Dhaulagiri Himal, a subrange of the Himalaya in the Dhawalagiri Zone of north central Nepal. It lies northwest of Pokhara, an important regional town and tourist center.
