A typical mountain house for a relatively poor family in Nepal has mud-plastered walls and a thatched roof. A woman is seen preparing red-ochre (raato maato in Nepali) to color this house. Red ochre is a pigment made from clay, and it is used both for the interior and exterior walls as well as for the floors. In homes like these, women paint the floors almost every day. Outside painting is done for festivals such as Dasain and Tihar.
