A woman is cooking in front of a smokeless wood-stove built on a raised platform in Tukche village, Nepal

Size: 675×1024

In Tukche, Nepal, a woman stands in front of a raised stove platform and cooks food. Lying on the platform are some tin cans, pots and pans and other kitchen paraphernalia. The stove is a “smokeless” variety.

This stove is an improvement from the traditional one which keeps the smokes inside the kitchen as well as the house, thereby exposing the cook, and other members of the household to greater risk of developing respiratory diseases. This stove, in addition to taking the smoke out through a built in chimney, also consumes less amount of wood.
