A man and several women spinning wool at a Tibetan rug factory near Bouddhanath, Kathmandu, Nepal

Size: 1024×675

Near Kathmandu, Nepal, several Tibetan women and one man sort wool for carpet weaving on their spinning wheel.

After the Chinese takeover of Tibet in 1950 many Tibetans fled across the Himalayan mountains into Nepal and India. Several refugee camps were established in different parts of Nepal, including this one in Boudhanath, near Kathmandu city. Carpet weaving for domestic and monastic use is an ancient Tibetan craft, and carpets are popular products from refugee communities even today.
