Flat, mud-roofed houses, piles of firewood and arid mountain sides in Kagbeni village, Nepal

Size: 1024×694

Stacks of wood are piled up on a wall by the houses and on rooftops in Kaagbeni village, Nepal. The rectangular houses has flat mud-plastered roofs.

This region lies at ’shadow range’--North of Himalayan range, blocking the rain clouds coming from the South. It therefore rains very rarely in this area. This is dry and very cold most of the time. The mud roofs last several years and people dry their wood stock out in the open.

Firewood is the major source of fuel including for cooking and heating houses. The houses have thick walls which keep it warm during winter and during night while keeping cool during day and during hot days.
