A pagoda-style structure called a Chorten in Purang village, en route from Muktinath to Jomsom in the Mustang district of Nepal. The structure has a crown on top and has two round orange circles on the front wall, symbolizing two eyes. On both sides of the main structure are two smaller piles of stones. The structure is built as a gate to the village, but chortens also memorialize Buddha’s teachings. There are eight different types of chortens symbolizing eight important events in Buddha’s life. Chortens are indicators of Buddhist villages.
