Kagbeni village, surrounding terraced fields and rugged mountain sides
Kaagbeni village lies at the bottom of a rather arid mountain. The terraces have ripening buckwheat crop. A few groves of trees. The houses are rectangular with flat, mud roofs. Terraced fields are at the lower end of the mountains . A river flows by the village.
This village lies at the trans-Himalayan region, which is also called shadow-range. It lies to the north of the Himalayan range and therefore sees very little rainfal as most of the rain clouds coming from the South is blocked by the northern Himalayan barrier. Therefore, these terraced fields lie at the lower end of the mountain slopes where it is easier to irrigate with snow melt channeled from nearby stream and river. Moreover, people cultivate crops which require less amount of water, such as buckwheat and barley in this region.
The houses have mud roofs and they last several years as there is not much rain. Moreover, these structures also naturally control the temperature as it is warm when it is very cold outside and it is cool when it is very hot outside, especially in the day.
