A bronze statue of a man holding a flag stands atop a tall stone pedestal. Eagles adorn the middle section of the pedestal, while a large square plaque fills the lower section.
This statue is of Miguel Hidalgo in the town of Dolores Hidalgo. Miguel Hidalgo is one of the heroes of Mexico’s War of Independence. Hidalgo was a parish priest who called his Indian parishioners to revolt on September 16, 1810 (currently Mexico’s Independence Day). Hidalgo was unsuccessful, but by 1824 the movement he started would eventually result in an independent Mexico.
