- Farmville's choice: In this lesson, students will learn about rural life in North Carolina at the turn of the century. Home demonstration and 4H clubs implemented many programs to help people learn better farming techniques, ways of preserving food, and taking care of the home. Several North Carolina leaders went to great lengths to ensure the success of these programs. In part of this activity, students help the town of Farmville dedicate a monument to one of those people. (Page 2.6)

This is a black and white photograph of a food preservation display, possibly at State Fair or Farm and Home Week. An older woman in a plaid dress is looking at jar of canned fruit or vegetables. Behind her is a wall of shelves full of canned jars of food. On the floor next to her feet are gourds and bushel baskets of yams and potatoes. On a chest with glass doors are cans and sitting in front of it are two large crocks with covers on them.
